Frequently Asked Questions
How do pack meetings go?
Pack meetings generally start at 3 PM, one Sunday per month, August - May. The meeting starts with a line up of each den, the presenting of the colors, the US Pledge of Allegiance, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Law. Then, leadership typically give some announcements and scouts may receive awards from completed adventures.
Next, the pack breaks into dens in order to work on their next adventure. Scouts typically enjoy a snack brought by a parent and the meeting ends around 4:30.
What are adventures?
Adventures are the cub scout path to advancement. Each adventure is a grade-specific, theme-specific set of requirements for cub scouts to accomplish in order to earn awards. The requirements may be as simple as having a conversation, or as complex as designing or building a set of items. Each advancement is crafted to nudge scouts towards the goals of Scouting.
Will my child get a badge?
Cub scouts earn belt loops, which are small awards that can be displayed on the cub scout's belt or in a holder of your choosing. After completing each year's required adventures and two elective adventures, scouts earn a badge for the completed year.
What is a troop?
Scouting troops are for students in 6th grade through their senior year of high school. They follow a different model and curriculum than cub scouts.
Do I need a tent and camping gear?
No! Very good, rentable camping equipment is available from Sports Basement and other retailers in the Bay Area on a per-day basis. Coming soon: Packing Lists, Camping How-To, and More! You can also ask around the pack if anyone has extra equipment they can bring with/for you.
Do you do the same things as Girl Scouts?
Girl Scouts
Scouting America's Organization
Cub Scouts /Scouting America
Cub scouts as an organization is split into sections. The national organization is Scouting America, formerly Boy Scouts of America.
Council
Scouting America has councils that are in charge of geographic locations. The council for Pack 12 is the Golden Gate Area Council.
District
Councils are further split into districts: GGAC Pack 12 is in the Golden Gate District.
Chartered Organization
The next smallest unit is the pack, which is organized by a chartered organization. A chartered organization partners with Scouting America to deliver a Scouting program. The CO for Pack 12 is the SF Council of Japanese Christian Churches.
Every pack has a Cubmaster and possibly an Assistant Cubmaster. There are also other committee members that help run the pack.
The pack can have scouts from five ranks:
Lions (K)
Tigers (1st)
Wolves (2nd)
Bears (3rd)
Webelos (4th)
Arrow of Light (5th)
Each rank can then be broken down into one or more dens. A den is the smallest unit in the organization, and usually has 5-8 scouts, a Den Leader, and maybe an Assistant Den Leader.
